If your car is registered in Dubai and the mulkiya is due for renewal, RTA vehicle testing is the step that decides whether the renewal goes through. Most drivers call it car passing. The test is quick and cheap, but a fail means a second trip, a re-inspection fee and the repair bill anyway. BRITFIX is a garage in Al Quoz, so this guide is written from the workshop side: what the tester looks at, what the test costs, and the faults that send most cars back.
RTA vehicle testing at a glance
RTA vehicle testing is the technical inspection a car must pass before its Dubai registration can be issued, renewed, transferred or exported. For a private car it costs AED 170, takes up to 45 minutes, and the pass certificate is valid for 30 days.
| Item | What the RTA lists |
|---|
| Light vehicle test fee | AED 170 (AED 150 inspection plus AED 20 knowledge and innovation fee) |
| Mobile test at your location | AED 370 |
| Re-inspection after a fail | AED 50 for a light vehicle |
| Time needed | Up to 45 minutes |
| Certificate validity | 30 days |
| New cars | Exempt for 3 years if you are the first owner and the car was registered new |
These figures were checked against the RTA service page in October 2026. Fees and rules are set by the RTA and do change, so confirm them in the RTA Dubai app before you go.
Where to take the test and how to book
The test is carried out at RTA-approved testing centres, not by the RTA itself. The main operators in Dubai are Tasjeel, Shamil, Wasel, Al Mumayaz and Tajdeed, and several sites sit beside ENOC and EPPCO fuel stations. Any approved centre can issue the certificate. None of them repair cars.
Booking is done through the RTA Dubai app or rta.ae. The RTA made appointments mandatory at testing centres from 2 June 2025. When that change was announced, walk-ins were still accepted at some centres for an extra AED 100. A mobile testing service that comes to your home or office is also available at the higher fee shown above.
What to bring
Bring the registration card (mulkiya) and your Emirates ID. If you are going back after a fail, bring the fail sheet, because it tells the tester which points to check again. Clear the boot enough for the spare wheel to be seen if the car carries one.
What the RTA vehicle inspection checks
The inspection is a roadworthiness test, not a service. The tester is not interested in whether the oil is fresh. They check that the car is safe and has not been altered beyond what is allowed.
- Brakes: braking force is measured on a rolling road, side to side and front to rear. Uneven force across an axle fails even when the car stops normally.
- Suspension and steering: play in ball joints, track rod ends and bushes, plus damper performance.
- Tyres: tread depth, uneven wear, sidewall damage and age.
- Lights and signals: every bulb, plus headlight aim.
- Glass and tint: cracks or chips in the driver's line of sight, and tint darkness against the legal limit.
- Emissions and exhaust: exhaust gas readings and the condition of the system.
- Leaks and underbody: oil, coolant and brake fluid leaks, plus corrosion or damage underneath.
- Body and identity: chassis and engine numbers matching the registration, and body damage serious enough to be a hazard.
Pre-test checklist: 10 minutes at home
Most fails can be found on your own driveway. Do this the week before the appointment.
- With the engine running and a helper, check every light: both headlight beams, indicators, hazards, brake lights, reverse and number-plate bulbs.
- Look at each tyre for uneven wear across the tread, cracks in the sidewall and bulges. Check the pressures.
- Look under the car after it has been parked overnight. Fresh drips of oil, coolant or fluid need tracing before the test.
- Check the windscreen for chips or cracks in front of the driver.
- Push down hard on each corner of the car. It should settle in one bounce.
- Drive slowly over a speed bump and listen for knocks.
- Test the horn, wipers and washers.
- If the windows are tinted and you do not know the percentage, have it measured.
The eight faults that fail most cars
These are the lines that appear most often on a fail sheet. Each one can be checked before you go.
1. Tyres past their limit
Tread below the minimum, uneven wear from an alignment fault, cracked sidewalls, or a tyre that is simply too old. Dubai heat ages rubber faster than the tread wears, so a tyre with plenty of tread can still fail. The fix is new tyres for the affected wheels and correcting whatever caused the uneven wear.
2. Brake imbalance or worn pads and discs
The rolling road measures each wheel separately. A sticking caliper or a glazed pad shows as an imbalance long before you feel it through the pedal. Cleaning and regreasing seized slide pins often cures an imbalance without new parts. Otherwise it is brake pads, discs or a caliper.
3. Blown bulbs and headlight aim
The cheapest reason to fail. A single number-plate bulb or a headlight aimed too high is enough, and most owners never notice either one.
4. Worn suspension components
Perished bushes, worn ball joints and tired dampers. Speed bumps and road grit wear these faster than the mileage suggests. In most cases individual suspension parts can be replaced without changing whole assemblies.
5. Window tint over the limit
Nothing is mechanically wrong, and the car still fails. Tint on the front windscreen is not allowed, and film on the other windows must be within the legal limit. If it is over, it has to come off.
6. Oil and fluid leaks
Anything dripping is a fail. Common sources are valve cover gaskets, oil filter housings, sump plugs and power steering lines.
7. Cracked or chipped windscreen
Damage in the driver's field of view fails even when the glass is sound. A chip can often be filled if it is caught early. Once it spreads across the sight line, the screen needs replacing.
8. Exhaust and emissions faults
A blowing joint, a failed catalytic converter or a non-standard exhaust. Emissions readings also drift when the engine misfires or an oxygen sensor is tired, so start with a diagnostic scan before replacing exhaust parts.
Failed the test? Do things in this order
A fail sheet is an itemised list of what to fix, and the RTA lists the re-inspection for a light vehicle at AED 50.
- Read every line. Each one is a separate fail point. Some are five-minute fixes and some are not.
- Get the whole list quoted at once. Fixing items one at a time means more than one retest.
- Ask what caused it. Uneven tyre wear means an alignment fault. Brake imbalance often means a sticking caliper. Replacing the symptom without the cause means failing again next year.
- Go back promptly. The fail sheet and the centre will tell you how long you have for the re-inspection.

Buying a used car? The pass certificate is not enough
A fresh pass certificate shows the car cleared a safety test on one day. It says nothing about accident history, a gearbox that shudders or a two-year gap in the service record. An independent pre-purchase inspection answers the questions the test does not ask.
Frequently asked questions
How much does RTA vehicle testing cost in Dubai?
The RTA lists the test for a light vehicle at AED 170. That is AED 150 for the inspection plus a AED 20 knowledge and innovation fee. The mobile service that tests the car at your location is AED 370, and a re-inspection after a fail is AED 50.
How long does the RTA car test take?
The RTA states up to 45 minutes for the inspection. Allow extra time for queuing at the centre, particularly at the end of the month when many registrations expire.
Do new cars need RTA testing?
Not at first. The RTA exempts a new car from the technical inspection for 3 years, provided you are the first owner and it was registered new. After that the test is needed at each renewal.
What is car passing in Dubai?
Car passing is the everyday name for the RTA technical inspection. A tester checks brakes, suspension, steering, lights, tyres, emissions, glass and body condition, then issues a pass certificate or a fail sheet.
How long is the RTA test certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for 30 days. Complete the registration renewal or transfer within that time, or the car will need testing again.
Can a garage check my car before the test?
Yes. A garage can put the car on a lift and go through the same points the centre checks, so anything that would fail is found and quoted first. It is the simplest way to avoid a wasted trip.
